Junior Researcher START Fellowship

Supporting Independence

To support the transition of talented postdocs into independent researchers and to attract outstanding researchers to the MCQST community, MCQST offers Junior Researcher START Fellowships. With a total budget of €300,000 for a two-year funding period, fellows have the opportunity to launch their own scientific projects within MCQST’s Research Program.

The fellowship funds are flexible and may be used in accordance with DFG regulations, including for equipment, staff, consumables, travel, and the fellow’s own salary. Laboratory and office space will be provided by an MCQST Principal Investigator (PI).

MCQST expects START Fellows to leverage this opportunity to secure major and competitive independent research funding (e.g., ERC-Starting Grant) during the fellowship.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

Eligible candidates are at the beginning of their academic career and have completed their doctoral degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, or engineering. Research experience in quantum science and technology is of advantage and should be documented by publications in high level academic journals.

  • Postdoctoral applicants must have less than 4 years of experience after their PhD (e.g., in 2026, PhD awarded on or after 1 January 2022; career breaks will be taken into account).
  • Each applicant must have a supporting host—an MCQST Principal Investigator (PI)—who agrees to provide office and laboratory space, as well as the necessary research infrastructure. The host must submit a support letter directly to the selection committee.
  • Only one application per research group (PI) is allowed per call.
  • Applications may be supported by multiple PIs if relevant.

Good to Know

  • The budget plan must be reasonable, can be used for equipment, consumables, travel, or for salaries according to the DFG rules for funding.
  • Applicants can plan the funding for their own position
  • Projects must start before the end of the following year
  • In each call, if the budget allows it, up to 2 fellows will be admitted.

Selection Process

The MCQST Executive Committee selects the Junior Researcher START Fellows. In a two-stage selection process, candidates who successfully passed the first stage will be invited for an interview in Munich, likely in spring 2026. Selection criteria are scientific excellence and an original research proposal.

  • Priority will be given to outstanding candidates who not only present an excellent research proposal but also demonstrate the leadership skills required to establish and lead their own research group.
  • In the case of equally ranked proposals, preference will be given to candidates from outside the MCQST community.
  • The start date of the fellowship will be fixed in agreement with the MCQST office, but should begin no later than 1 January 2027.

MCQST is an equal opportunity employer, and it is important to us to make our selection processes as fair and transparent as possible. Furthermore, we would like to explicitly encourage researchers with a background that is underrepresented in the QST community to apply. We are committed to creating and sustaining a welcoming work environment for everyone, regardless of ethnicity, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, social class, or age.

Please note that we cannot accept applications without a support declaration by a MCQST PI. If you are not already in contact with one of our PIs, please have a look at our members page. It is important that an MCQST PI supports your application as they will provide not only funding and academic guidance but also structural support like an office space. We are aware that this adds an extra hurdle for external applicants but this approach has proven very fruitful for a successful outcome of the fellowship in the past.
