Dr. Nathan Wilson - TU Munich, WSI

1. Briefly describe your current position, research focus, and your role within MCQST.

I am a START Fellow, studying gate-defined superlattices in 2D materials and basic properties of 2D magnetic materials. My research is hosted by Prof. Jon Finley at the Walter Schottky Institut of TUM.

2. Could you please describe further your experience as a START fellow?

The START fellowship provides a lot of flexibility and freedom compared to most other postdoctoral fellowships. It gave me the chance to start my own subgroup in Prof. Finley’s chair, and we now have two Ph.D. and two M.Sc. students. With support from my host and from MCQST, we expanded our research topics beyond the START project through collaborations and applying for seed, followup, and 3rd party funding.

3. What are you looking forward to over the holidays?

Fingers crossed, I’m going back to the US to visit my family. I haven’t seen them since I moved to Germany, and am really looking forward to a long visit and some home cooking. I’ll miss the Glühwein and the Stollen, but will make up for their absence with plenty of Eggnog and fruitcake.
