Experimenting with microscopic mechanical resonators is like having an orchestra of instruments on a chip – and we play on them with light! Exploring how to get them to play your composition is absolutely fascinating even more, if this teaches us about their fundamental nature and enables new applications.

Research focus: Cavity Optomechanics, Optical Microcavities, Light-matter interfaces, Metamaterials, Optical control

In my group we explore how fundamental properties of artificial materials, like the propagation of vibration, can be manipulated using light. We develop optical microcavity systems that allow us to sense and control microstructured thin films - mechanical metamaterials. The structuring enables us to control localization, dissipation and collective properties of vibration in the metamaterial. We study how optical forces can be used to dynamically tune these properties. Achieving this will open a door to optically configurable functional devices and circuits. These can also be used to interface other on-chip systems like optical quantum emitters and would enable us to build detector devices with extreme sensitivity in detecting forces and analyte substances.
