Doctoral Program Guidelines

These guidelines are for doctoral researchers in the MCQST Doctoral Program. They explain how to join, what the program asks of you, and where to find support during your PhD. The program offers structured training, guidance, and a community of quantum researchers across Munich.

Joining the program

There are two ways to join. All members have equal access to program benefits, regardless of funding source.

  • Application: for prospective candidates who have not yet started their PhD. Apply during the annual application phase.
  • Registration: for doctoral candidates who have already started their PhD in an MCQST-affiliated research group in Munich. Registration opens twice a year (spring and fall).

Supervision & Thesis Advisory Board

Every doctoral researcher has a Thesis Advisory Board (TAB): a supervisor for primary guidance and a co-supervisor, ideally from another group, for independent advice. You actively participate in selecting your TAB.

Key points:

  • Sign the supervision agreement (PDF) when you join
  • Meet each TAB member at least once a year. Additional meetings are possible at any time.

Curriculum: What is required?

The curriculum is flexible and encourages active and strong engagement in the quantum community.

  • Mandatory component: completion of 2 courses, selected from the elective modules of the Master’s in QST program (offered jointly at LMU and TUM, including lectures and seminars)

  • Recommended activities (not mandatory): MCQST Summer School and MCQST Conference, plus further seminars, workshops, and training events.
  • Community engagement: A high level of active participation within MCQST is expected. This includes: regular attendance at colloquia, seminars, and relevant workshops.

Students are also encouraged to take part in organizing academic and community activities (e.g. summer schools, seminar series, workshops), fostering collaboration and helping shape the program.

Annual Progress Report

The report is a chance to reflect on your progress, spot challenges early, and get structured feedback from your TAB.
Submit it by October 31 each year.

The report consists of two parts:

  • Scientific progress (shared with TAB)
  • Optional confidential reflection (for the coordinator)

Please meet your supervisor before submitting; this can be part of your regular feedback meetings. A follow-up with your co-supervisor is recommended.

To support you, MCQST provides recommendations and guidelines on the structure and content of the progress report.
