Join the MCQST Doctoral Program
Whether you are about to start your PhD or are already well into your research, the MCQST Doctoral Program is open to you. As the central framework for doctoral researchers in quantum science and technology in Munich, it connects a diverse community across all quantum fields, from quantum computing and quantum sensing to quantum materials and quantum communication. Our members are based at LMU Munich, TU Munich, the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, and the Walther-Meißner-Institut.
There are two ways to join, depending on where you are in your PhD:
- Apply for an MCQST Doctoral Fellowship – for prospective PhD candidates who have not yet started their doctorate. Applications are open through the annual fellowship call.
- Register for the MCQST Doctoral Program – for doctoral researchers who have already started their PhD in an MCQST research group.
Apply for an MCQST Doctoral Fellowship
For researchers looking to start a PhD
Prospective doctoral candidates can apply for an MCQST Doctoral Fellowship through the annual call for applications, which is organized together with the MQV Doctoral Fellowship Program.
The fellowships are intended for external candidates who have not completed their Master's studies or Master's thesis in Munich. Candidates who have completed a Master's degree or their Master's thesis at a Munich university or research institution are not eligible to apply for an MCQST Doctoral Fellowship.

Register for the Doctoral Program
For PhD candidates already working in an MCQST group
Doctoral candidates who have already started their PhD in an MCQST research group are encouraged to register for the MCQST Doctoral Program.
Registration takes place twice a year, during the following periods:
- Summer Semester: 15 April–15 May
- Winter Semester: 15 October–15 November
The online registration form for the MCQST Doctoral Program will be available during these registration periods.
How to register
- Review the Doctoral Program Guidelines
- Fill in and sign the Supervision Agreement together with your supervisor and co-supervisor
- Complete the online registration form [link TBA]. You will be asked to upload the signed Supervision Agreement as well as a profile photo for the Doctoral Researchers website.
That's it! Once your registration has been received and processed, you are officially part of the MCQST Doctoral Program.
