Light & Matter Exhibition

1st Permanent Exhibition on Quantum Optics in the World

The "Light and Matter" exhibition explores the foundations of quantum optics and illustrates how our understanding of light and matter has evolved over the past century. These insights are crucial for the rapidly advancing fields of quantum science and technology, which are at the forefront of current research.

From 19 June 2024 to 26 October 2025, "Light and Matter" exhibition, developed by the Deutsches Museum together with the Cluster of Excellence Munich Centre for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST), was displayed in the special exhibition area of the museum. From 2028 onward, it will be part of the new permanent exhibition Physics in the currently closed section of the museum.

Virtual Tour

In the meantime, we invite you to explore the exhibition virtually. Simply open it in your browser and navigate through the different thematic areas. Numerous demonstrations on quantum physics and quantum optics are available as videos.

Enjoy your virtual visit!

Opening of "Light and Matter"

On 18 June 2024, we celebrated the opening of "Light and Matter". The event featured remarks by Markus Blume, Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts, and Wolfgang Heckl, Director General of the Deutsches Museum. It also included a panel discussion and a public talk by Nobel Laureate Wolfgang Ketterle (MIT). The evening, moderated by Ralph Caspers, is available on our YouTube channel.
