MCQST Summer School 2026: Four Days of Quantum Science in the Bavarian Alps

6 August 2026

MCQST held its first-ever Summer School from June 22–25 in the Bavarian Alps. Over four days, doctoral researchers from across the cluster came together to exchange ideas, present their work through short talks and posters, and get to know each other's projects and experiences. The Summer School continues the tradition developed in the IMPRS-QST programme: a dedicated summer school for PhDs, designed by PhDs.

The programme combined scientific and professional development. The three tutorial talks by experts offered deeper insights into the latest research in quantum networks, maschine learning for quantum physics, or quantum algorithms, and the soft-skills workshops rounded out the academic side. The particularly insightful alumni session gave participants a chance to hear firsthand what comes after the PhD and learn from others' career paths and experiences. A World Café feedback session, organized by the PhD Board, offered space for open exchange and reflection on the doctoral experience within the cluster. Social activities — including a hike, cooling off by the pool, and volleyball — rounded out the days and gave participants plenty of chances to connect outside the seminar room.

The Summer School was organized by PhD students themselves, with support from the MCQST office. A huge thank you to the organizing team: Atiye Abedinia (LMU München), Jakob Pforr (TUM), and Hendrik Timme (MPQ) for their dedication and hard work in putting together such a rich and memorable programme — the event was a great success, and is now planned to take place every two years.

A New Doctoral Programme for MCQST

Now in its second funding period, MCQST is launching its own doctoral programme, building on the successful model established by IMPRS-QST. Supporting early career researchers is a core part of the cluster's mission, and the new programme joins a range of dedicated support measures — including the Summer School — designed to help doctoral researchers thrive throughout their PhD.

Watch: Impressions from the Summer School

To capture the spirit of these four days, Denise Cocchiarella created a beautiful video offering a firsthand look at the atmosphere of the Summer School — from the talks and workshops to the hikes and moments of connection in between. It's a wonderful way to relive the event, or get a taste of what to expect next time. Enjoy!
