Exchange, Insights and Conversations from the Quantum Community

On July 9, the Munich Quantum Alumni Network (MQA) hosted its third summer networking event, bringing together current and former members of Munich’s quantum science community. The event provided an opportunity to exchange ideas, reconnect with former colleagues, and build new connections across the quantum research and technology landscape.

The programme began with three alumni talks, offering current PhD students insights into different career paths within academia and industry. Dr. Matthias Mader, Research Engineer for Highly Coherent Diode Lasers at TOPTICA, spoke about his transition “From a university laser lab to an industry laser lab.” Dr. Vjosa Blakaj, currently a postdoc at the University of Copenhagen, shared her academic journey “Between Mathematics and Quantum Information Theory.” Dr. Bianca Scaparra, MBE Scientist at Quandela, presented her path “From single photons to full-stack photonic quantum computing” and her transition from a PhD to industry.

Following the talks, the speed networking session provided plenty of opportunity for informal exchange. Early-career researchers in particular had the chance to connect directly with alumni, ask questions about different career paths, and learn from their experiences. The programme concluded with a relaxed evening of ultimate frisbee on the MPQ lawn as well as a grill and drinks, giving participants further opportunity to continue conversations and strengthen connections within the community.

The alumni network is aimed at all current and former members of Munich Quantum Valley (MQV), the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST), and the International Max Planck Research School for Quantum Science and Technology (IMPRS-QST).
