Research Area 4: Quantum Matter

When many quantum particles interact, they can organize themselves into highly correlated states of matter with unexpected and fascinating properties. Such quantum many-body states are extremely challenging to predict theoretically and to realize experimentally, despite the simple underlying interactions between the particles. They host a wealth of emergent properties that are at the forefront of the research in quantum matter.

The key goals of the Research Area Quantum Matter are to:

  • Explore emergent entangled quantum phases, including superconductivity, magnetism, and topological phases, in novel experimental regimes.
  • Realize and synthesize new material platforms, such as 2D moiré materials, bulk magnetic crystals, and hybrid systems.
  • Develop novel experimental probes both conceptually and in the lab to detect quantum correlations in exotic states.
  • Advance theoretical methods for correlated quantum matter.
